ISBA's Mandate
Innovation Scaling and Business Acceleration (ISBA) is part of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) and operates under the Centre's impact delivery function. ISBA supports icipe's mission by working alongside research teams to ensure that innovations emerging from insect science are relevant, tested, market aware, and capable of delivering measurable impact.
ISBA is embedded across icipe's four thematic areas of plant health, animal health, human health, and environmental health. From early stages of innovation development, ISBA collaborates with researchers to co-develop solutions, integrate user and market perspectives, and strengthen pathways for adoption, enterprise development, and scale.
ISBA also supports iterative testing, validation, and refinement of technologies within icipe's thematic and platform-based research approaches, while also engaging private sector partners and organised producer groups to enable commercialisation, enterprise development, and market uptake of icipe innovations. By working with farmers, women, and youth groups ISBA helps develop viable production and marketing pathways for selected innovations, ensuring that solutions are grounded in real-world contexts and responsive to evolving user needs.

What ISBA Does
ISBA plays a catalytic role in the innovation pathway by supporting the transition of icipe research outputs into use. Key functions include:
- Co-developing innovations with researchers from early stages to ensure relevance and feasibility
- Testing and validating innovations under real-world conditions
- Supporting adaptation and refinement of technologies based on user feedback
- Facilitating pathways for scaling and wider uptake
- Strengthening linkages between research, markets, and delivery systems
- Supporting business development, partnerships, and commercialisation processes where relevant
Through these functions, ISBA ensures that innovations are demand-driven, scalable, and responsive to user needs.
